In implementation of a November 2009 presidential memorandum directing all federal agencies to engage in meaningful consultation with American Indian tribes, in 2010, for the first time in its history, the Department of Education independently conducted official consultations with federally recognized American Indian tribes and heard from American Indian school officials and educators across the country.
